Feature Request: Auto Name Formula from Surrounding Text
Summary:
Enable BOE Pro to automatically generate a formula name by selecting a few words immediately before or after the formula within the BOE text. This will create meaningful, contextual names for formulas without requiring manual entry, making them easier to identify and reference.
Problem Statement:
When a BOE contains many formulas, it becomes difficult to determine which formula corresponds to a specific estimate or line of text. Users must manually name each formula or rely on arbitrary naming conventions, which is time-consuming and prone to inconsistencies. This makes it harder to trace formulas back to their originating context in the document.
Proposed Solution:
Allow users to configure BOE Pro to automatically suggest or assign a formula name based on nearby text in the BOE.
When a formula is created or edited, BOE Pro should scan a configurable number of words before and/or after the formula.
The system should propose a formula name constructed from those surrounding words (e.g., the nearest descriptive phrase or line item text).
Users should be able to accept the suggested name as-is, edit it before saving, or opt out and provide a custom name.
Provide basic configuration options to control how many words are captured, whether to prioritize text before or after the formula, and how to handle special characters or very long names (e.g., truncation rules).
Ensure the naming logic runs consistently wherever formulas are created or managed in the BOE.
Benefits:
Improves traceability by tying formulas directly to the descriptive text they relate to.
Reduces manual effort and time spent naming formulas individually.
Decreases the risk of misidentifying formulas when many are present in the same BOE.
Creates more consistent, readable formula names, enhancing overall usability and maintainability of complex BOEs.
