Three Point Estimating feature in BOE Pro

Feature Request: Three-Point Estimating in BOE Pro

Summary:
Introduce native three-point estimating (optimistic, most likely, pessimistic) in BOE Pro so estimators can capture uncertainty and variability in effort and cost estimates directly within their BOE workflows, without relying on external tools or other applications.

Problem Statement:
Today, estimators working in BOE Pro do not have a built-in way to perform three-point estimates. Users who rely on this method must either use other products (such as CE) or external spreadsheets, then manually translate results back into BOE Pro. This fragmentation makes it harder to maintain a single source of truth, increases the risk of data entry errors, and limits broader adoption of three-point estimating across the estimator user base using BOE Pro.

Proposed Solution:
Add first-class support for three-point estimating within BOE Pro line items and/or estimate elements.
Allow users to enter three values per estimate:

  • Optimistic (best-case)

  • Most likely

  • Pessimistic (worst-case)

Provide configurable calculation logic (e.g., PERT-style weighted average) to derive a single expected value used in downstream BOE calculations and reporting.
Display all three input values and the calculated result in the BOE Pro UI, with clear labeling and tooltips explaining the calculation.
Support export and reporting of three-point estimate data so that downstream consumers (reviews, audits, management reports) can see both the input range and the derived estimate.
Ensure the feature integrates smoothly with existing BOE Pro estimating workflows so current users can adopt three-point estimating without disrupting existing data structures.

Benefits:
Expands advanced estimating capabilities to a larger portion of the estimator user base directly within BOE Pro.
Reduces reliance on external tools and manual data transfers, decreasing the risk of calculation and transcription errors.
Provides better visibility into estimate uncertainty and risk by capturing optimistic, most likely, and pessimistic values.
Improves consistency of estimating practices across teams by making three-point estimating a standard, supported workflow in BOE Pro.
Strengthens BOE Pro’s value proposition for estimators who already use three-point methods in other tools.
